The West Los Angeles Group promotes election of environmentally sensitive candidates to public office, and maintains a working relationship with legislators and other elected officials.
Political News: Sierra Club California released its 2015 Legislative Report Card. The environment fared well, but oil industry influence evident. Eight Assembly members received 100 percent scores on the report card, including Richard Bloom of Santa Monica. That meant they voted with the Club’s recommendations on a list of priority bills that would protect the environment and public health. Fourteen Senators received 100 percent, including Kevin de Leon, Holly Mitchell, and Fran Pavley. On the other end of the spectrum, Sebastian Ridley-Thomas was among three Assembly members garnering the lowest scores among Democrats and was also a leading recipient of contributions from oil interests, according to the Secretary of State's new online system. Kathryn Phillips, director of Sierra Club California, noted that “It was disappointing—not surprising—to see how many legislators who had low scores received a lot of oil money.”
